Considerable uncertainty seems to surround the zone concept and the term itself is at present being used in widely different ways. This is regrettable because the term zone can be accurately defined and should be re-established in its original meaning.

The following notes were compiled for the information of the Australian Committee on Stratigraphic Nomenclature, but may be of interest to others. Previous pertinent discussions of the zone concept are those by Diener (1918), Arkell (1933, 1946), and Kleinpell (1938). These contain full information on the earlier history of the usage of the term.
