The earliest geological activities of our Government will no doubt be of interest to many persons because of the marked contrast to the modest beginning a century ago with the splendid achievements of modern geologists in broadening the science and in pointing the way to development of vast wealth in minerals. This early history of the Acts of Congress appropriating funds for geological work came to the attention of the writer some time ago when inquiry was made of the director of the United States Geological Survey regarding the disposal of the following described appropriation.
