We thank Douglas Waples for his discussion of our paper and for providing us with the opportunity to clarify some misconceptions about both single- and multiple-temperature ramp pyrolysis determinations of petroleum generation kinetics. As indicated in our paper, single-ramp kinetics are appealing because they are fast and less expensive. When appropriate data are unavailable, we also construct simple kinetic models that assume a frequency factor similar to that proposed by Waples. The real issue is whether as a matter of practice single-ramp kinetics are as reliable as multiple-ramp kinetics and should be the method of first choice. Neither we nor...
