Name: Bireno and Douleb carbonate platforms

Author. G. F. Camoin

Location: From 33° to 36° north latitude and 4° to 12° east longitude, Algeria, Tunisia, and adjacent offshore areas (Gulf of Gabes)

Geologic time interval: Late Cretaceous, Turonian and Coniacian

Tectonic-sedimentary setting: Passive continental margin

Basin type: Epeiric shelves

Paleoclimate: Generally arid, tropical

Platform types: Rimmed carbonate shelf (Turonian) and carbonate ramp (Coniacian)

Platform geometries: Turonian is 50 to 80 m thick, 50 to 100 km wide, and at least 800 km long; Coniacian is about 100 m thick, approximately 150 km wide, and at least 800 km long

Facies and fossils: Turonian: tidal flats, lagoon, shelf margin, slope, basin; Coniacian: lagoon (locally), shoal and open platform, deep ramp, basin; rudists, corals, red and green algae, and foraminifera

Systems tracts: Turonian: highstand systems tract; Coniacian: transgressive systems tract

Stacking patterns: Turonian: progradational, simple sigmoid parasequences; Coniacian: backstepping profile with a gradual retreat and subsequent drowning
