We welcome the clarification sought by Bitzer (1999) to our paper on mechanisms for generating overpressure (Osborne and Swarbrick, 1997). Bitzer raises four points:
(1) Fluid flow toward the sediment surface to achieve equilibrium during compaction
(2) Terzaghi’s relationships for porosity versus effective stress
(3) Sediment permeability and compressibility as controls on disequilibrium compaction
(4) Use of Athy’s equation in numerical modeling
