Driese and Dott (1984) have contributed an interesting and well-documented account of the variety of styles of late Paleozoic transgressive-regressive sedimentation in a mixed carbonate and siliclastic depositional setting. Studies such as that of Driese and Dott (1984) have a special importance because there are few modern analogs for ancient mixed carbonate-siliclastic depositional environments. Like many workers dealing with heterogeneous sedimentary sequences, Driese and Dott (1984) employed the statistical technique of Markov analysis or “Markov chain analysis” (e.g., Krumbein and Dacey, 1969) to provide a quantitative basis for their sedimentologic models.
