In Kansas, the geographic location of drilling activity shifted. Completions were up slightly in western Kansas, but completions in eastern Kansas, especially shallow completions, suffered a big drop. Exploratory drilling found 258 new discoveries, up 16% from 1984.

Missouri reported a decrease of 61% in exploratory drilling from 1984. The most successful drilling took place in the Forest City basin.

In Nebraska, attention has been focused recently on the Paleozoic section as a potential target. A significant discovery was completed in 1985 in the Permian-Pennsylvanian Minnelusa in Cheyenne County.
