The purpose of a stratigraphic code or guide is to assure consistent and uniform usage in classification and nomenclature of geologic rock and time units and thus to promote unambiguous communication.
No complete time scale for the Precambrian has yet been adopted internationally. This reflects the inadequacies of current stratigraphic codes for dealing with the Precambrian as well as the diverse philosophies (James, 1978) which have been used to develop Precambrian time scales.
