ABSTRACT
In offshore Louisiana in 1980, 919 wells were drilled, a decrease of 4 wells from 1979. The overall success rate decreased 2.4% from 1979; 13 more wildcats were drilled, with an increase in success of 0.3%, to 19.6%. Exploratory drilling decreased from 98 wells in 1979 to 97 wells in 1980. The success rate decreased 1.5%, to 56.7%, with 55 new pool and outpost discoveries. In federal OCS sale A62, held September 1980, 116 tracts in offshore Louisiana that encompass 755,176 ac were leased for a total expenditure of $2.677 billion. Geophysical activity increased from 583 crew weeks reported in 1979 to a record 826.5 crew weeks in 1980.
