Activity in east Texas and north Louisiana showed strong gains during 1978, a welcome change from the even level of activity and the decrease in activity which occurred respectively in the two areas in 1977. Arkansas activity showed a slight decrease during 1978.

South Arkansas efforts concentrated on the Smack-over, Cotton Valley, and the Pettet. Arkoma basin discoveries included Orr, Boone, and Spiro pays. North Louisiana activity again centered on the Cotton Valley and Hosston with interesting discoveries in the Pettet and Smackover. In east Texas the Cotton Valley was the most frequently drilled objective with well-distributed activity in most of the other pays.
