Abstract
Gas seeps are well known on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico. The Serendipity Gas Seep area is unusual in the large number of seeps (probably over 19,000) in a small area of about 6,000 sq km. Seeps are observed within the water column of 12- and 3.5-kHz sounder records. Smear zones and wipeouts on the records are attributed to effects of gas within the uppermost sedimentary section. The seep area has a close relation to faults within the sediment column and former channels now filled. Magnetic evidence indicates possible basement structural control of this zone.
