Ewing et al (1950), reporting on the results of refraction profiling offshore Cape Cod, Long Island, Cape May, and the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, disclosed a maximum of 5.25 km of sedimentary material within this part of the Atlantic Shelf. The underlying basement, designated as Precambrian from evident correlations at the shoreward terminals of the profiles, had a computed velocity of 5.72 km/sec.
