Early in 1946, Vincent C. Kelley, University of New Mexico, and two UNM alumni, Caswell Silver and Gordon H. Wood, Jr., conceived the idea of founding a “Geological Society of New Mexico.” The Albuquerque Committee, consisting of members from UNM, the U.S. Geological Survey, and industry, sent out a call for the organizational meeting, held in Albuquerque on April 12, 1947. The register of this meeting includes 89 names; Kelley was elected president; Harrison A. Schmitt (father of our geologist-astronaut), 1st vice-president; Charles B.
