In 1976 the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG) had 2,324 members across Canada, the United States, and in many countries throughout the world, and is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. It is the largest petroleum geologic society in Canada, and the second largest in the world. The Society was formed 50 years ago in December 1927, and originally was known as the Alberta Society of Petroleum Geologists. Its purpose then was to serve the professional and scientific needs of geologists in the fledgling western Canada oil industry, and this is still a primary objective.
