Crude oil from Alaska’s North Slope is denuded of light hydrocarbon constituents—methane, ethane, and propane—by hydrate formation reducing the mixture-bubble-point pressure by 500 psi or more. Hydrates may have denuded completely some shallow Alaskan oil reserves in situ, making the production of this oil much more difficult.
