In a letter dated September 7, 1973, Walter F. Fahrig of the Geological Survey of Canada, requested the American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature to consider expansion of the Stratigraphic Code “… to include stratigraphic nomenclature based on magnetic polarity.” In response, the Commission voted on November 11, 1973, at its 28th Annual Meeting, that the IUGS Liaison Committee of the Commission consider paleomagnetic classification and recommend, if appropriate, revisions to the Code. This Note is a report by the Committee to the Commission and to the profession.
