Norman Page’s discussion of our paper is welcome on two counts: it disposes of the concept of subduction and it focuses attention on sea-floor spreading. Page considers the evidence for sea-floor spreading “overwhelming,” and to accommodate the assumed addition of oceanic crust at the midocean ridges without compensating subduction, he postulated “explosive” expansion of the earth during the past 200 m.y. The suggested mechanism is an internal phase change which is alleged to have increased the earth’s radius by 33 percent or more. Page cites Carey (1970) in support of his postulate; we might add Meservey (1969) who, on topologic...
