The Maui discovery of 1969 is rated as one of the world’s largest fields. Production is from two zones. The gas and oil have very low sulfur and wax content.

The onshore Kapuni field started production of both gas and condensate.

Exploration activity increased considerably, as it has done for several years. Marine seismic surveys covered 7,670 line-mi, and on land, 4 seismic crews shot 774 mi. Drilling reached an all-time high of 75,744 ft, of which 58,792 ft was offshore. This is a 25% increase from the preceding year.

There was a large increase in concessions leased offshore, and a slight increase in onshore concessions. Offshore, 387,517 sq mi was under lease in 1970.
