Hedberg’s suggestion that high-wax oils may reflect the contribution of terrigenous organic matter to the genesis of petroleum has been tested in 41 samples from offshore wells on the Niger River delta. Interpretations of the environment of deposition of the 41 samples on the basis of relative abundance of arenaceous and planktonic Foraminifera and the total foraminiferal population supported the hypothesis in 34 (83 percent) of the 41 samples.
