Fault nomenclature is difficult to teach. The student is expected to learn a multitude of terms, many of which are used ambiguously in current literature—clear evidence that a systematic approach has not been adopted. A large part of the problem lies in the failure to differentiate separation and slip. This fundamental distinction in fault terminology should permit a clear visualization of what is known and what is inferred.
