In this address I should like to try to do three things: first, discuss certain aspects of general principle in the determination and interpretation of orogenic dates; second, review some of the critical evidence on the matter that has been found in the transition zone between the Colorado Plateaus and the Great Basin in Utah; and third, offer a few remarks on the basic nature of the time scale on which we plot these and other events of earth history.
