The growing emphasis on regional stratigraphic analysis as an exploratory tool in the oil industry has increased tremendously the need for better regional correlations and more stratigraphic detail. To meet this need, more and more effort in recent years has been devoted to the preparation and publication of regional stratigraphic cross sections presenting detailed logs and outcrop sections. The local geological societies affiliated or cooperating with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists have been particularly active in this effort and have published more than 115 cross sections—most of these since 1945.
