The problem of origin of the Athabasca bituminous sands is most intriguing to petroleum geologists because of its bearing on the origin of oil, and because it is by far the largest single accumulation of petroleum ever discovered. Although the Athabasca bituminous sands have been known since 1788 and many descriptions and hypotheses of their origin have been published in the past 80 years, to this date, their origin has remained controversial, and no wholly satisfactory explanation has been forthcoming.
