ABSTRACT
In Illinois and Indiana, 4,181 wells were drilled for oil and gas in 1954, as compared with 3,474 in 1953, an increase of 20 per cent. Total oil production increased 8.6 per cent, from 71,606,000 barrels in 1953 to 77,813,000 barrels in 1954. Exploratory drilling increased 5 per cent, from 949 completions in 1953 to 999 completions in 1954.
Thirty-seven new pools, 79 extensions, and 48 new pays in producing areas were discovered in the two states in 1954.
As in previous years, most of the discoveries in 1954 were in Mississippian formations. Three new pools produced from Pennsylvanian sandstone, 20 from Mississippian sandstone and limestone, 6 from Devonian limestone, and 7 from Silurian limestone.
