Abstract
A highlight of oil and gas development and exploration activities in Eastern Canada during 1953 was the increase in development drilling of, and production from, shallow Devonian oil pools in southwestern Ontario. The possibility of the occurrence of oil beneath the gas cap in six Silurian reefs was tested during the year. Oil production amounted to 314,546 barrels, an increase of 53% over 1952 and gas production, 10,607,378 MCF, an increase of 30% over 1952.
Ninety-one exploratory wells were drilled compared with 88 in 1952. Three hundred and twelve development wells were completed, an increase of 16% over 1952. Of these, 79 were small oil producers, 146 gas producers, and 87 were dry holes.
