Drilling in North Louisiana and Arkansas continued at an active rate in 1953. In all, 278 exploratory wells and 1,591 development wells were drilled, an increase of 5 per cent over 1952.
This increase is due primarily to a 23 per cent increase in development drilling activity in Arkansas.
Exploratory drilling in this area resulted in 11 new discoveries in Arkansas and 13 new discoveries in North Louisiana.
In North Louisiana, Wilcox exploration accounted for 8 of the 13 discoveries. Cotton Valley exploration is credited with 3 of the remaining successes.
North Louisiana had a decrease of 15 per cent in geophysical activity in 1953 as compared with 1952. This was due, primarily, to a marked decline in the use of the seismograph.
