Approximately 194 new fields and pools were discovered in Kansas during the year 1953, most of which were named as new discoveries by the nomenclature committee of the Kansas Geological Society. The total of 194 discoveries includes 167 oil discoveries and 27 gas discoveries. In addition there were 46 discoveries of deeper production in previously producing pools, including 41 oil and 5 gas discoveries; there were 2 discoveries of shallower production in previously producing pools, both being oil discoveries. Of the total discoveries, 27 were of the new-field classification, the remainder new-pool discoveries.

Kansas produced 119,429,620 barrels of oil and casing-head gasoline, and 420,588,383 MCF of gas in 1953.

There were no successful wildcats in either Missouri or Iowa. In Nebraska east of the 98th meridian there was one successful new-pool wildcat, in Richardson County.
