ABSTRACT
There has been a continuation of the increase in drilling activity noted in 1950, a total of 3,112 wells of all categories having been drilled. The number of exploratory tests increased by 10.7 per cent, while the number of development tests remained about the same as in 1950. Both of these classes are tabulated by geological trends. The number or size of new-field discoveries has not been outstanding; the best discovery rate has been in the Eocene trends. Important reserves have been added by a total of more than 200 extensions and new-sand discoveries. The most important increases in reserves have been in the downdip Frio-Vicksburg and in Gohlke field of the Wilcox trend. In all, 163,200,000 barrels of crude oil and 22,051,657 barrels of hydrocarbon liquids were produced during the year which is an increase of 25 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively, over 1950. Free gas well production was 977 billion cubic feet for 1951 which is an increase of 35 per cent over the previous year.
