Flowers, “Lower Middle Devonian Meta-Bentonite in West Virginia,” and noting on his accompanying map the widespread distribution of this bentonite in West Virginia. This undoubtedly is the same seam of bentonite occurring at or near the contact of the Onondaga formation and the overlying Marcellus shale of the Hamilton group that has been used as a horizon marker by geologists and drillers in north-central and western Pennsylvania and south-central New York since the opening of the Tioga gas field in north-central Pennsylvania in the early 30’s.
