ABSTRACT
In all, 4,424 wells were drilled for oil and gas in Illinois and Indiana in 1950 as compared with 4,018 in 1949, an increase of 10 per cent. Total oil production decreased 3 per cent, from 74,139,000 barrels in 1949 to 71,914,000 barrels in 1950.4 Wildcat drilling increased from 1,217 completions in 1949 to 1,334 completions in 1950. Fifty-five new pools,5 102 extensions, and 64 new producing zones were discovered in the two states in 1950.
Most of the discoveries in 1950 were in Mississippian formations, but the Devonian limestone produced oil or gas in four new pools, and Pennsylvanian sandstone in three. There were no discoveries of new pools in Silurian or Ordovician formations.
