ABSTRACT
Nevada.—No exploratory wells completed in 1949.
Oregon.—One new-field wildcat abandoned—no discoveries.
Washington.—Two new-field wildcats abandoned—no discoveries.
California.—Total exploratory footage in 588 exploratory wells completed as producers or abandoned as dry holes in 1949 was 2,138,501 feet. Comparable figures for 1948: 488 wells and 2,005,366 feet. Exploratory activity during 1949 was greater by 20.5 per cent as to number of wells and 6.6 per cent as to footage than in 1948. Exploratory wells were 12.4 per cent and 12.3 per cent successful as to number and footage, respectively. The successful wells discovered 31 new pools and fields. The Cuyama South field was the outstanding discovery. Production during the year was about 332,942,000 barrels of crude oil, 27,189,000 barrels of natural gas liquids, and 543,488,000 MCF of gas (includes gas from dry gas fields and residue gas from oil fields). Basement was reached by 82 unsuccessful exploratory wells at depths varying from about 115 to 13,818 feet. There were 46 exploratory wells active at the end of 1949.
