The following method for determining the oil content of well cuttings was developed because of the need of a fast simple procedure which could be used without access to laboratory equipment.

The method is particularly adapted to cable-tool carbonate cuttings but may likewise be used with rotary cuttings provided that they are picked and reduced approximately to the size of cable-tool cuttings.
