The origin of the so-called Equus beds of south-central Kansas has been of considerable interest for the past 50 years. The area covered by these deposits embraces parts of McPherson, Harvey, Marion, and Sedgwick counties, and lies between the valleys of the Smoky Hill and Arkansas rivers. The various ideas concerning the physiographic development of this area were summarized and discussed by Haworth and Beede 3 in 1897.
