Not many months ago I had an opportunity to observe phenomena very similar to those described by Mr. Gail F. Moulton in an article recently published in this Bulletin.2 This was in South America, in Argentina. On the east side of the Andes Mountains, in Mendoza Province, there are numerous seepages of heavy asphaltic oil, usually associated with water that contains hydrogen sulphide. In many places the sedimentary strata are cut by dikes of rafaelite, a solid bitumen.
