In the determination of porosity of oil sands natural cementing materials are often recognized that will not remain unaltered when the fragment of rock under investigation is heated to a red heat to remove the oil remaining in the pores. It is essential that this cementing material maintain its original composition and volume, as it constitutes an integral part of the non-porous portion of the rock. To remove the oil adhering to the sand grains, a process of washing with some solvent is necessary.
