The presence of Mississippi lime west of the Granite Ridge in Kansas has been questioned at times. Deep drilling has definitely established its presence in Sumner, Sedgwick, Harvey, and western Butler counties. In these counties, all lying west of the Granite Ridge, the Mississippian section is similar in lithologic characteristics and thickness to the normal section penetrated east of the ridge. The ridge interrupted the east to west continuity, but did not prevent its deposition to the west. Mississippian seas covered the present location of the ridge as far north as northern Butler County, and probably its entire extension northward....
